G. Gibson Gallery is pleased to announce our upcoming exhibit with new work by Cable Griffith and Maija Fiebig. This exhibits mark our second solo exhibit with Cable Griffith, and our fourth solo exhibit with Maija Fiebig.

New paintings and drawings by Cable Griffith explore the fact and fiction of reported “sightings”. Mysterious lights pulse, parade and hover over landscapes of dense forests, meandering waterfalls and silhouetted tree lines. This new body of work is a continuation of Griffith’s style of painting - referencing early video game aesthetic and digital mark-making. Cable will be in the gallery for the opening reception on First Thursday, December 3rd, and present an Artist Talk on Saturday, December 12th at 1pm.

New work by Maija Fiebig will inhabit the back section of the gallery. Continually influenced by the natural world, this group of paintings and embroidered textiles pay homage to the seemingly magical world of flora and fauna. Carefully detailed paintings shimmer and pop with colors both subtle and bright. Unique textile works are pieced together meticulously with needle, thread, sequins and glass beads, giving the plant life represented a jewel-like presence. Maija will be in the gallery for two First Thursday Receptions: December 3rd and January 7th, 6-8pm.

Artist Statements

In the summer of 1983, a friend and I witnessed a blue cube slowly rolling through the air, above the treetops, across my family’s yard.  To this day, I still have no idea what we saw.  Rational explanations could suggest a variety of possibilities, but I’ve preferred to leave space in my mind for this event to be unknown and unanswered. Mystery is a fragile territory, whose borders are constantly permeated by fact-seekers and the belief in a singular truth.  Within the boundary of mystery, multiple truths exist comfortably together, claiming a space where anything is possible.

Sightings is a body of work inspired by reports of unexplained phenomenon. I’ve always been fascinated in these stories and the cultural curiosity surrounding them.  I’m less interested in seeking evidence from these reports and more interested in the space that they hold in popular culture. Countless websites archive ongoing reports of sightings all over the world, sometimes accompanied by drawings, photos, video, and narratives from individuals who claim to have seen something remarkable. I’ve referenced aspects of some of these reports throughout this work.

This work takes its inspiration from a combination of sources, including reports, Romantic landscape paintings, and digital collages of my own photographs from multiple hikes and camping trips.  The resulting work is a mixture of truths and fictions. Romantic landscape painters like Albert Bierstadt depicted a vast and untamable world, suggesting the insignificance of man in the face of overwhelming natural forces. Today, most of that landscape has been conquered and covered by a civilization whose aspirations now aim beyond the terrestrial. In a world where anything seems possible, perhaps we give the most pause to things that don’t.

I come to a place of rest in two ways: being in nature and making art. There I feel exempt for a time from the strangeness of being human. The magic inherent in the natural world continues to be undimmed for me.

This body of work pays homage to plants as entities. As saints or deities are honored in various traditions, here I honor plants as living, spiritual beings — in their lives on the earth, in the afterlife, and in reincarnation. These paintings are altars to these humble denizens of the natural world.
